About Castelsardo

Especially relevant, Castelsardo is an ancient medieval village (founded almost a thousand years ago), considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. Originally built as a fortress overlooking the sea, the castle was the former residence of the Doria family of Genoa; in later periods it hosted also of the judge Eleonora d’Arborea and finally passed under the Aragoneses during the Spanish domination.
Around the ancient fortress the old town grew, with narrow streets, stairways, arches and important monuments; here you’ll find the Cathedral and the small churches of Santa Maria, of Purgatory and the Benedictine monastery. Certainly, from the castle, you have one of the most spectacular view of the Gulf.
The castle is also home to the Museum of the Mediterranean plots.
So, don’t miss the visit to the near town walls (Manganella stands), with the sentry path to the sea called “Mandracho of Soccorro”; and also the drawbridge and the Pisan port, one of the two entrances to the city.
